Triple Celery Soup / Thai Chicken Stew / Rosemary Squash Bisque

Article & Recipe: A celery-soup celebration

It’s a soup based on both the familiar green stalk celery (high on the list of underappreciated vegetables, in my view) and the knobbly white celeriac, or celery root.

Triple Celery Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: Thai Chicken Stew

Combine the carrots, onions, chiles, ginger, and vegetable oil in a medium bowl and microwave for approximately 10 minutes until the vegetables soften. Transfer the vegetable mixture to your slow cooker.

Blog Post & Recipe: The World is Not Ready for Bacon Squash Caviar

Now, I do precisely one thing with winter squash. Well, technically two things. I cube it, salt it, oil it, roast it. At this point, I either turn it into a soup, or I don’t. If I chose the former, it becomes Rosemary Squash Bisque, with a supporting cast of pork products, vegetable broth, rosemary, cream, and the tender ministrations of my Cuisinart.

Super-eggy Scrambled Eggs / Banana Bread / Christmas Dinner with Roast Goose

Blog Post & Recipe: Super-eggy Scrambled Eggs

I came across it while paging through the new Serious Eats book - the idea is to use whole eggs plus egg yolks to make your eggs extra rich, creamy, and flavorful.

Blog Post & Recipe: Sunday Brunch: Banana Bread

This recipe for banana bread is about as simple as it gets, but one of the beauties of banana bread is how well it incorporates odds and ends from the cupboard and fridge. A handful of chocolate chips, some dried cranberries, or even a grated apple can happily be folded into this batter

Article & Recipes: Give goose a gander

Turkey is traditional, but goose makes a fine centrepiece for a Christmas feast [...] If in doubt, buy a meat thermometer, and in general, don’t stuff birds – cook stuffing separately as it can really slow down the whole cooking process.

Mulligatawny / Butternut Pumpkin & Black Bean Enchiladas / Curried Eggplant Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: Mulligatawny Reboot

Meet my favorite chicken soup in the entire world.

Blog Post & Recipe: Butternut Squash and Black Bean Enchiladas

I can’t begin to explain how delicious they are. I mean, sweet butternut squash with spicy enchilada sauce? That doesn’t even sound good! But they are amazing!

Blog Post & Recipe: Recipe: Curried Eggplant Soup...Eat.Live.Be

It's sweet and spicy and has a lot of staying power due to the white beans that are pureed into it and all the fiber from the eggplant and apple that are mixed in there as well. (Yes, there's an apple in it. Trust me. It's a good move.)

Jugged Hare / Fennel & Pear Soup / Black Pudding Profiteroles

Blog Post & Recipe: Jugged Hare

The recipe kicks off asking for a mixture of flour, mace, cloves and allspice to roll the chunks of rabbit in before frying.

Blog Post & Recipe: Good warm, even better cold - Fennel and Pear Soup

I was standing with a fennel bulb in my hand when I saw a very ripe pear on the table and somehow my mind connected with the two and there was one - the vision of a fennel and pear soup.

Blog Post & Recipe: Black Pudding Profiteroles

Remember the Chorizo Choux Puffs? When I published the recipe on my Estonian site, then one of the readers, Ilse, suggested using our Christmas favourite, finely chopped black pudding instead of chorizo. I liked the sound of that, so nicked the idea, adding a spoonful of roasted onion flakes for an extra depth of flavour.

Roast Tomato Soup / Pickled Jalapeño Peppers + Pickled Daikon / Roast Jerusalem Artichokes with Hazelnut Gremolata

Blog Post & Recipe: Roasted Tomato Soup

I roasted the tomatoes with shallots and added thyme, because I’m on a tomatoes & thyme kick. But you could add any herb you’d like.

Blog Post & Recipe: A Peck of Pickled Peppers

Once you have determined the amount of liquid you will need, add that and the remaining ingredients to a pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour this mixture back over the peppers, screw on the lids, and refrigerate for a few days (or as long as you can wait)

Pickled Jalapeño Peppers ... Pickled Daikon

Recipe: Roasted sunchokes with hazelnut gremolata

This is a great technique for when sunchokes are in season. The insides are so tender it is almost creamy, while the edges are delightful bits of crispy goodness. Topping them off with the gremolata bring everything to life. The vibrant parsley and lemon with a bit of a punch from the garlic are wonderful with the toasty nuts.

Peppers, Chillies & Calf’s Liver / Sour Noodles / Baba Ghanoush Soup

Recipe: Peppers, Chillies and Calf’s Liver

An easy stir fry of calf’s liver, red bell pepper, leeks, shallots and chillies.

Blog Post & Recipe: Sour Noodles

I set out to make a sour noodle after having a crazy sour broth at a Thai place last week. I dressed these noodles with a bunch of lime and a little sriracha and they came out sour and delicious.

Blog Post & Recipe: baba ghanoush soup + abundance

I love super garlicky baba ghanoush. It’s so flavourful and easy to make at home. This soup is no different. You kind of just roast everything off, combine the veg with some liquid and let it rip in the blender/food processor.

Peppery Oatcakes / Zucchini Soup with Garlic Toasts / Øllebrød med Æggesnaps – Rye Porridge with Creamed Egg Topping

Blog Post & Recipe: There's no Cheddar without an oatcake

However, my favourite was a small oatcake from the selection of Marks & Spencer that was speckled with coarsely ground black pepper.

Peppery oatcakes

Recipe: Zucchini Soup with Garlic Toasts

Here's a great soup for fall. It uses up some of those zucchini and is easy, fast and healthy. I just add wine and chicken broth and fresh chopped chives for added flavor.

Blog Post & Recipe: Øllebrød med Æggesnaps – Rye Porridge with Creamed Egg topping

It’s a dish that is great for using up the leftover end-pieces of Rye bread, but of course it doesn’t have to be leftover bread. It is high in fiber, low in fat and it has a slightly tart taste. It’s a solid meal which leaves you with a sensation of fullness and you often see it feed to babies.

Blog Post & Recipe: Desperation Dinners: Salad Soup (i.e., Creamy Spinach Soup)

A quick perusal of my refrigerator and pantry saved the evening, producing a couple of bags of spinach, some pearl onions, a block of cream cheese, fresh garlic, chicken stock, and an assortment of dried herbs and spices. While I brought the chicken stock to a simmer, I gave the spinach a quick chop ... then dropped it into the stock, along with the pearl onions, garlic, and herbs. After a quick cook, I added the cream cheese.

Blog Post & Recipe: Fresh Spring Rolls with Spicy Carrot Sauce

I am a fan of cilantro, so for today's post, I thought I would serve up something cool and refreshing, that highlights vibrant herbs and vegetables. Perfect for these hot summers, you will find these Vietnamese-style Fresh Spring Rolls with Spicy Carrot Sauce satisfying with the crunch of carrots and cucumber, the coolness of slippery bean threads (rice vermicelli), succulent seafood, and peppy herbs such as mint, cilantro and basil.

Roast Eggplant with Tomatoes & Mint / 2 Beetroot Soups / Quick Preserved Lemons /

Blog Post & Recipe: roasted eggplant with tomatoes and mint

This is like eggplant bruschetta, except the eggplant is the bruschetta, topped with a Mediterranean summer salsa of a salad.

Blog Post & Recipes: Rich Beet Soup

The winner? The beauty alone of these soups make them worth a try. However, the wonderful earthiness of the Roman recipe can’t quite beat out the overall winning qualities of the modern dish.

So I was pretty thrilled to find out that it's possible to cheat and do a quick preserve. You just chop up some lemons, let them sit in salt and sugar for a couple hours and voilà... they're good to go.

Cuisses de Grenouilles (Crispy Frogs’ Legs) / Sourdough Mint Paratha / 8 Vegetable Recipes from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Blog Post & Recipe: Cuisses de Grenouilles or Light and Crispy Frogs’ Legs

Frogs’ legs do not taste like chicken. If they taste like anything, they taste like the crocodile I had in Nairobi

Blog Post & Recipe: Sourdough Mint Paratha / Indian Mint flatbread using Sourdough [ via ]

For those who do not recognize the title, Parathas are Indian flatbreads. Some are filled and some are just plain layered with ghee or oil. This one is more of a roti family, but is a little thicker than roti and has spices and herbs added to it.

Homemade Celery Salt / Caponata, Eggplant Relish / Creamy Mushroom Soup /

Blog Post & Recipe: Homemade Celery Salt Recipe

If you make some each time you buy a bunch of celery, you end up with a bottomless jar of celery-spiked salt. And this way, minimal celery parts go to waste, except the celery strings - my suspicion is there won't be many tears shed over that.

Blog Post & Recipe: Caponata, Eggplant Relish

The only apparent constants in caponata are eggplants, onions, olive oil, vinegar, and some sort of tomato product, either tomato sauce or fresh tomatoes or both. Other common ingredients include pine nuts, raisins, capers, olives, celery, basil, bell peppers, garlic, parsley and oregano.

Blog Post & Recipe: Creamy Mushroom Soup

I fell in love with the pic of a particular brand of mushroom soup which not only looked creamy white, but had fresh parsley in it- at least the pic had. The pic urged me so strongly to buy it and taste it and lo -the soup did not have any parsley. I know ,you may think of me as a nutcase, but that actually urged me to make a soup with parsley in it.

Melanzane Sott’Olio (Pickled Eggplant) / Cold Borscht / Chicken & Sweet Potato Hotpot

Blog Post & Recipe: Marie’s Melanzane Sott’Olio (Pickled Eggplant) [ via ]

One of the antipasti served at the start of this dinner was a traditional Sicilian pickled eggplant – melanzane sott’olio.

Blog Post & Recipe: cold borscht – chilled beet soup

That tang of the sour cream, the floral cool of the cucumber, the slight bitterness of dill – that’s the stuff you remember years later

Blog Post & Recipe: Angela Hartnett's chicken and sweet potato hotpot recipe

Hotpot is a traditional Lancashire dish made from mutton and topped with sliced potato ... This is my summer version – it has the same characteristics as a solid one-pot wonder, but with lighter ingredients.

Mauritian Peanut Sauce / Sweet Potato Soup / Roast Brussels Sprouts with Balsamic Vinegar

Blog Post & Recipe: Easy Mauritian Peanut Sauce

You need to cut everything finely. Chop your tomatoes very finely or simply blend them in a food processor. Also, cut your onions very small.

Blog Post & Recipe: [Dessert] Sweet Potato Soup

The key point of this dessert is to control the sweetness of the soup and texture of the sweet potatoes. The soup base cannot be too bland or too sweet and as for the sweet potato it must not be overcooked or else it will be too soft and affect the overall taste of this dessert.

Blog Post & Recipe: Roasted Brussels Sprout with Balsamic Vinegar

Ever since I discovered the lazy but healthy way to feed myself, I have been really into cooking foods this way. I’m talking about roasting foods, just like for my baked scallops and spicy potato wedges. Basically, foods are tossed with olive oil, then seasoned with the salt and pepper, before popping them into the oven to let it do its magic. With this method, both the cooking and cleaning up is totally no-fuss.

4 Vegetable Soups / Spinach Sandwich / Radish & Basil Pesto

Blog Post & Recipes: More soups I've been making

Spicy Coconut Soup ... Radiant Bok Choy ... Lettuce & Potato Soup ... If I have a lot of greens leftover I make Jamie’s Ribollita.

Recipe: Spinach Sandwich

Apply butter on two slices of bread (on one side) and spread this spinach filling all over on one slice, place the other bread slice and toast till golden. Serve warm.

Blog Post & Recipe: Radish and Basil Pesto

This recipe was inspired by a similar one I saw on Clotilde Dusolier's "Chocolate and Zucchini" sometime last year. Hers called for using just the radish greens, and she also used a more traditional hard Italian cheese such as parmesan or romano, typical of a straight basil pesto. I've added some basil for a little more complexity, marcona almonds for their sweetness, feta cheese for its tang, and finely diced radishes for a little extra spice and crunch.

Nettle Pakoras / Watermelon & Fennel Salad / Caribbean Spinach & Coconut Milk Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: The Sting

My favourite way with nettles is to make Indian pakoras, all spicy, crispy, mysterious and green. They are a doddle to make and amazing to eat, even my 6 year old loves them.

Blog Post & Recipe: Watermelon and Fennel Salad [via]

I decided to try, pairing with fennel, whose anise notes I think go rather well with something sugary, and a little garlic & herbed goat cheese to help balance things out. A little fresh mint, olive oil, salt and pepper and I had myself a watermelon salad

Blog Post & Recipe: Caribbean Spinach & Coconut Milk Soup

Coming back to the recipe, as I started reading, first ingredient was spanish onion…well sweetish for me in a soup, second garlic…hmm…okay..followed by green chillies, coriander seeds & cumin (now we are talking)..then there was coconut milk, chicken stock and limes (I was already sold)..I must say it was the most amazing find of the day- a Caribbean spinach soup with coconut milk and known indian spices!!

Thai Coriander & Pepper Spice / Avocado Mango Dunburi / Roasted Pumpkin & Chickpea Soup

Recipe: Spices - Thai Coriander and Pepper

A basic Thai flavour to use on its own or make into a green curry paste.

Blog Post & Recipe: Avocado Mango Donburi (Japanese Rice Bowl), aka Avo-don

Then a thought occurred to me—what if I applied the same concept that Chef Mashita used for coming up with the California roll, to maguro-don?

Blog Post & Recipe: Roasted Pumpkin and Chickpea Soup

Plus it’s easy to make. You are using only five ingredients, yet producing a fabulous flavour. There’s practically no chopping involved and while there’s some cooking in the oven you hardly have to do anything.

Caldo de Camarón (Dried Prawn Soup) / How to Prepare Black Fungus & Wood Ear Mushrooms / Green Tea Infused Sunroot Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: Where to Find Caldo de Camarón? Make Your Own...

That fresh squeezed lime juice is what makes all of the flavors in the soup, truly shine.

Blog Post: How to prepare black fungus and wood ears mushrooms

See where the red arrow points? If you feel around with your fingers in that part, you’ll know how much different the texture is from the rest of the fungus. That tough hard part should be cut off.

Blog Post & Recipe: Green Tea Infused Sunroot Soup ('Sunroot' is Jerusalem Artichoke)

We used green tea instead of broth in this soup. The flavors from the tea really works good together with the sunroot. Tea infusion is a fun way to experiment with new flavors in your standard soups.

Mutton Marinated in Yoghurt & Vinegar / Persian Pomegranate Soup / 9 Asparagus Recipes

Recipe: Mutton Marinated in Yogurt and Vinegar

I used mutton chops for this but you can use shoulder which is generally the best cut.

The pomegranates give it a sour, earthy flavour and the lamb adds intensity and richness. This type of Iranian stew is thick and hearty with chunky ingredients. I highly recommend it.

Blog Post & Recipe: SUQUET DE PEIX, a Mediterranean flavours Ode

Check all the ingredients of the recipe and see how healthy this dish is! We've got Olive oil, ripe tomatoes, fresh rock fish, some fresh seafood, garlic and onion, nuts ...

Blog Post & Video: How to Clean a Gizzard and Corned Gizzards and Cabbage

One of the more unloved giblets, gizzards are dense nuggets of deep burgundy meat. That’s right, I said meat. Even though a gizzard is an internal organ, it is made of muscle, just like the breast or thigh meat

Blog Post & Recipe: vegetable tamarind soup, sayur asam

I think almost all South East Asian countries have their own version of tamarind-based soup, slightly spicy with loads of soft vegetables. Malaysians with their laksa soup, Filipinos with sinigang, Thais with tom yam. Sourish tamarind deserves much more credits than it already has. It is one of the ingredients that made our cuisine as exotic as it now is.

Our tamarind soup uses sliced tamarind (asam potong) and salam leaves with vegetables that can nicely soak up all the beautiful flavors from tamarind, bay leaves, lemongrass, palm sugar (gula merah) and chilies.
