With weather this cold decided to make split pea soup with vegetables from farmers market.

Victoria's Chinatown does indeed offer a diverse selection of vegetables for sale. I can't write about them all, but here are some useful facts and suggestions for using six intriguing looking veggies.

The Best Way To Roast a Capsicum / Easy Baked Tofu / Creamy Edamame Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: The Best Way To Roast a Pepper

The most common method of roasting a pepper is to place them whole in a hot oven or over coals. Undeniably, this creates perfectly cooked, juicy flesh but the post-cooking removal of the seeds makes me swear furiously. Those sticky little buggers get everywhere!

Blog Post & Recipe: Easy Baked Tofu

I love it when dishes are good out of the oven and straight from the fridge. The marinade bakes into the tofu so it’s not a saucy dish. Add cubes to stir-fried veggies and serve over rice, toss on a salad, as a sandwich filling, with cooked quinoa, in a rice paper wrapper or just pop them in your mouth

Blog Post & Recipe: the saturday soup – creamy edamame soup

The texture of this is a little thick because of the edamame – think split pea soup. Feel free to thin it out with some more stock or water if it’s too thick for you. I ate this soup warm but I think it’s also a good base for a summer soup served cold or at least room temperature. My version is a simple whiz of the soybeans with a little coconut milk and S&P. Use it as a base to add some curry flavors, some heat from a chili or wasabi or some zing from a bit of ginger.

Mutton or Lamb Tangine / Split Pea Tom Yum Soup / Recipes For Couscous, Bulgar & Quinoa

Blog Post & Recipe: Mutton Tagine

Mutton ( or Lamb) Tagine , is one of the most recent dishes a long-standing favourite of mine , however I have usually cook it in a Le Cruset in the oven but wanted to see how this dish would work in a slow cooker.

They may be seemingly insignificant granular particles, but their punch can be mighty, as they're perfectly formed for delivering hefty whacks of flavour, which they steal greedily from herbs, garlic and spices in salads, stir-fries and soups.

10 Whole Grains / Edamame Dip / New Year Noodle Soup

Article & Recipes: Whole Grains 101

Grains are tasty, protein-rich, and easy to cook. Here’s a primer on 10 of our favorites, along with an assortment of recipes

Blog Post & Recipes: Edamame Dip

It's great on its own with veggies or pita crisps (or potato chips, if you're so inclined), or on a sandwich with a slice of cured ham.

Blog Post & Recipe: New Year Noodle Soup Recipe

At its core it is a bean and noodle soup featuring thin egg noodles swimming in a fragrant broth spiced with turmeric, cumin, chiles, and black pepper. You use a medley of lentils, chickpeas, and borlotti beans, making the soup hearty and filling without being heavy. You add spinach, dill, and cilantro. You add lime juice for a bit of sour at the end. And then you've got a number of toppings to add when you serve the soup

Kabocha French Lentil Soup / Cabbage Stir Fry / Tomato & Garlic Soup

Blog Post & Recipe: Kabocha French Lentil Soup Recipe

The soup? It is anise and ginger-spiked, with a broth thickened by lots of roasted winter squash.

Blog Post & Recipe: Bandhakopir Tarkari -- a cabbage stir fry

After you have added all the cabbage add salt and Red Chili Powder to taste, mix and cover. Intermittently take off the cover and saute. Covering and sauteing helps in cooking the cabbage faster and also requires less oil I think.

Article & Recipe: Hearty tomato soup is a crowd-pleaser

The recipe is down and to the right of the article.

... whole heads of unpeeled garlic are [covered] with olive oil and roasted until tender and soft. Then the heads are halved and the sweet, yielding garlic scooped out and added to a simmering mixture of tomatoes, leeks and herbs.

When pureed, this potage is thick and hearty with only a subtle hint of garlic flavor.

Chickpea Soup with Spices / Sloppy Joes / Bánh Mì

Blog Post & Recipe: Aromatic chickpea soup with sumac, cumin & turmeric

- don't overcook your chickpeas: they really taste so much better when the soup has a somewhat "coarse" consistency - a bit of bite, really.

Blog Post & Recipe: Sloppy Joes

The trick to this recipe is to brown the meat well, on high heat. Don't crowd the pan, work in batches, and don't stir the meat until it is well browned on one side.

Blog Post & Recipe: Bánh mì

Bánh mì (literally sandwich on French bread) originated mid-century in Vietnam, then under French colonial rule. At first, it was a luxurious foreign import, a baguette lined with cured meats, butter and cornichons. But after France’s ignominious retreat post ‘54 it was transformed into a thoroughly local, immensely popular, cheap meal.

Make Pulled Pork in the Oven / Chashu / Chickpea Soup

Blog Post: How to Make Pulled Pork in the Oven

Nothing with “2 liters of Coke” as an ingredient could possibly be classified as healthy. But since I doubt you’ll be eating this every day, I’m not that worried.

Blog Post & Recipe: Japanese Chashu

Chashu is a dish made of fattier cuts of pork that are braised over low heat for a very long time. The low, slow cooking, renders out the fat while turning the tough collagen in the meat into gelatin which keeps the meat moist while making it meltingly tender.

Blog Post & Recipe: chickpea soup

Essentially, the chickpeas, onions, and garlic get plunked in a pot, and covered with liquid. It could even be made in the slow cooker. Then heat, wait, and eventually, purée. The most time consuming part is getting the chickpeas puréed at the end to create a beautifully silky product.

Bolognese Sauce. Easy Lentil Soup. Cut up a Chicken.

Blog Post & Recipe: Ryan’s Bolognese Sauce

According to Ryan, red onions are much stronger than yellow or white onions when they’re raw…but cooked down, there’s not much difference.

Blog Post & Recipe: Ridiculously Easy Lentil Soup

On one hectic evening this week, I needed a meal on the table in about a half hour ... I finished the soup off with canned, crushed, fire-roasted tomatoes (which are saucier and take less time to cook than diced) and some hickory salt for a great smoky flavor that made the soup taste like it had cooked for hours.

Article & Recipes: Marcello Fiorentino cuts up a whole chicken to save money

Begin with a good sharp boning knife to divide each bird into two pieces by making two cuts just behind the legs and through the backbone. It's a neat, clean V-shaped cut that divides the bird into a breast and leg portion. This is a different cut than many butchers make who cut the bird in half top to bottom.

Red lentil, lemongrass and coconut soup.

Recipe: Red lentil, lemongrass and coconut soup

If, like me, you need to feel the fire on a regular basis, this is a great little recipe to have in your armoury. It involves picking up some lemongrass next time you're in the supermarket/Asian shop, but these hardy sticks last for a good couple of weeks in your fridge, and can be frozen to no ill-effect as well.

Herb kookoo - a sort of dense souffle of chopped herbs, tart red barberries, and walnuts, bound together with eggs - is a traditional accompaniment to the Nowruz meal ... The other dish prepared this day is ash-e reshteh. This hearty noodle soup, full of beans and herbs, lightly thickened with flour, and finished with kashk, a kind of yogurt whey that adds a dairy tang and a bit of richness, is always made on Nowruz.

Chickpeas.

Article/recipe: Skye Gyngell pays homage to the mighty chickpea.

Includes recipes for scallops with chickpeas, mint and chilli; buffalo mozzarella, chickpeas, red pepper and olives; chickpeas with fried eggs, labne, burnt sage and chilli butter; and chickpea, tomato, chard and bread soup. Be aware that The Independent screens its articles behind sign-in walls after they have been on the site for a few days.

I love the gentle, nutty flavour of chickpeas and the way they sit so comfortably with the heat of chillis, lemon juice, olive oil and herbs such as mint and coriander. I love them partly pounded with olive oil and finished with lemon juice, chilli, garlic and tahini paste to form a rough type of houmous eaten on toast or simply with flat bread.

Most tamales that we have the occasion to eat here in the US are wrapped in corn husks, the method typical of central and Northern Mexico. In the more tropical areas of Mexico and Central America, you'll commonly find tamales wrapped in banana leaves or plantain leaves, which have their own unique and subtle flavor.
